Ferry service was partially restored today! I took the first one out at sunup with @chadallen to check out the state of lower Manhattan. Waterlogged and relatively desolate, the area is now saturated with the diesel fumes of generators powering massive pumps, as the great water removal project is underway. Still without power (note the darkened traffic light), but most of the subway tunnels and building entrances seem pretty dry. We met a city worker who said he has been working 4 straight days without sleep, and told us tales of the watery tunnels he’s been working on that are choked with dead rats. The Brooklyn Battery tunnel was still a scuba cave, which was a pretty shocking sight to see: a spot normally seen full of congested traffic, now completely full of water. #sandy #hurricanesandy - sgoralnick http://instagr.am/p/RfnE41AvYq/
